Theme Presets

You’ve most likely landed here because you’ve been looking to customize the theme settings of your Shopify theme, and stumbled upon two files in the config directory—settings_schema.json and settings_data.json. This article will look at the differences between settings_schema.json and settings_data.json. We’ll deep dive into the various uses and nuances of the settings_data.json file.

Theme settings - are also referred to as theme options which allows you to customize the look and feel of your online store.

The settings_data.json file stores the theme settings data saved from the theme editor. It can also include 'theme styles', also known as presets. If presets are defined, it enables you to choose a theme style .

We have 2 presets to choose from; Erickson and Jenkins.

Sections - are now available everywhere!

Shopify has updated its theme architecture that allows themes like Erickson fully modular by moving all of a theme’s Liquid code into JSON templates, which are available across the online store. These templates define the structure of a page, and everything from which sections are on a page to how each setting is configured.

Because these templates are available across the online store, sections are now available on more pages than just the homepage. This unlocks a range of new opportunities for retailers like you to personalise every aspect of you store.

Sections are modular, customizable elements of your store's homepage, which can have specific functions.

Sections - what are they and how are they used?

Sections are used to host reusable modules of content that allow you to customise your store. Examples of these section include your page's header & footer, which are static and visible on every page, aswell as dynamic sections that displaying images in a slideshow, advertising collections, featuring products, and much more.
